Why Roller Hockey

Rival Hockey is dedicated to promoting the growth and development of roller hockey across the greater St. John’s metro area. As a dynamic, fast-paced, and non-contact sport played 4-on-4, roller hockey places a strong emphasis on skating, puck handling, and creativity. Its open style of play not only enhances hockey-specific skills but also offers a highly effective and fun environment for players of all levels.

Just some of the benefits to Roller Hockey are,

  • Higher amount of puck time
  • Excellent for fitness and conditioning
  • Improved decision making
  • Increased offensive creativity
  • Develop longer skating strides
  • Improved passing techniques
  • Helps improve vision and playmaking
  • Defensive awareness- helps master man to man coverage

In addition to its developmental benefits, roller hockey is a more cost-effective alternative to ice hockey. Players can utilize most of their existing ice hockey gear, requiring only a few specific additions such as roller hockey skates and cover pants. For optimal comfort and mobility, a lightweight padded girdle is also recommended in place of traditional bulky ice hockey pants.

The advantages of roller hockey are well recognized by some of the game's top athletes. NHL stars including Connor McDavid, Connor Bedard, Kent Johnson, Andrew Cristall, Alex DeBrincat, Dylan Strome, Pat Maroon, and projected 2025 first overall pick Matthew Schaffer have all credited inline hockey with playing a key role in their development.

Rival Hockey will operate out of the Goulds Lions Arena, which will feature a brand-new, state-of-the-art roller hockey surface. This specialized flooring offers excellent grip, speed- enabling ice-like quick cuts, stops, and ice-like puck movement and shooting.
